Who you pay

Council tax for Petersfield is billed and collected by East Hampshire District Council (EHDC). The bill covers more than the district council. EHDC's council tax information page explains that the majority goes to Hampshire County Council, with further shares for the Police and Crime Commissioner, the fire and rescue authority, and your town or parish council, which here is Petersfield Town Council.

Petersfield council tax charges for 2026/27

EHDC set the 2026/27 charges at a council meeting on 26 February 2026. The figures for Petersfield parish, taken from the council's council tax per valuation band 2026/27 document on 5 October 2026, are in the table at the bottom of this page. Band D, the band usually quoted for comparison, is £2,453.20 for the year.

Charges differ slightly from parish to parish because each town or parish council sets its own share. Sheet, Steep, Stroud and Buriton are separate parishes with their own figures in the same document, so if you live just outside the town check your own parish line. For Band D in 2026/27 the document shows £2,330.16 for Sheet, £2,322.47 for Steep, £2,334.98 for Stroud and £2,300.18 for Buriton.

These are the full annual charges before any discount or reduction.

How to check your band

Your band is printed on your council tax bill. Bands are set by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA), not by the council. If you think your band is wrong you can challenge it through the VOA at gov.uk/contact-voa, or by phone on 03000 501 501 if you cannot use the online service. EHDC is clear that you must keep paying your current bill while a challenge is being decided.

Ways to pay

EHDC's paying your council tax page lists four ways.

Direct debit. The council describes this as the easiest way. You can choose to pay on the 1st, 7th, 15th, 24th or 28th of the month.

Online. You can pay on the council's website with a debit card. The council says no other type of card is accepted.

By phone. The automated dial-and-pay line is 0300 303 0590 and runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is debit card only. Have your council tax account number ready: it begins with 710 and is on your bill.

Through your bank. You can set up a standing order or make one-off payments by internet banking, quoting your account number beginning 710. The council's bank details are on the payment page. If you pay this way you can choose the 1st, 15th or 24th of the month and must tell the council which date you use.

Ten instalments or twelve

Instalments are normally spread over 10 months, from April to January. You can ask to pay over 12 months, April to March, which makes each payment smaller. The number of months available depends on when in the year you ask.

Discounts and reductions

EHDC's council tax discounts page sets out the main ones.

If you are the only person aged 18 or over living in your home, the single person discount takes 25% off the bill. A property occupied only by students is exempt, as listed on the council's exemptions page. An annexe used by a family member can get a 50% discount. If someone in the household has a disability and the home has features they need, such as an extra room or space for indoor wheelchair use, the council says you may qualify for a reduction.

Council tax support is a separate, means-tested scheme for people on low incomes. EHDC advises applying straight away if you think you qualify because payments cannot always be backdated. The application form and a benefits calculator are on the council's council tax support page.

Moving home

Tell the council when you move into, out of, or within East Hampshire. The online forms are on EHDC's tell us you're moving page. If you are moving out or moving within the district you will need your payment reference beginning 710. The council notes that if your move is more than two weeks away it may not be able to process the change immediately.

If you are struggling to pay

EHDC asks residents who cannot pay to get in touch as soon as possible. The council's general number is 01730 266551, open 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, and its what happens if I don't pay page explains the recovery process.
