Petersfield Schools: Primary and Secondary Options and How to Apply
Petersfield has an infant school, a junior school and a secondary school in town, plus four village primaries nearby. Here is the list, the application dates and how to check your catchment.
Petersfield has Petersfield Infant School (4 to 7), Herne Junior School (7 to 11) and The Petersfield School (11 to 16), plus village primaries at Sheet, Steep, Langrish and Buriton. For September 2027, the Year 7 deadline is 31 October 2026 and the Reception and Year 3 deadline is 15 January 2027 (Hampshire County Council, checked 5 October 2026). Check your catchment school with the council's catchment finder.
The state schools around Petersfield
This list comes from the Department for Education's Get Information about Schools register, checked 5 October 2026. Schools in the town itself are Petersfield Infant School (ages 4 to 7), Herne Junior School (7 to 11) and The Petersfield School (11 to 16). Villages nearby have all-through primaries for ages 4 to 11: Sheet, Steep, Langrish and Buriton. The village primaries are linked to their register entries below, and the table lists every school with its address and website.
Petersfield Infant School is at St Peter's Road, GU32 3HX and Herne Junior School is at Love Lane, GU31 4BP. The register lists both as Hampshire community schools. The Petersfield School, at Cranford Road, GU32 3LU, is a mixed, non-selective academy in the Bohunt Education Trust, with an age range of 11 to 16.
The four village primaries are Sheet Primary School (School Lane, Sheet, GU32 2AS), Steep Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School (95 Church Road, Steep, GU32 2DE), Langrish Primary School (Ramsdean Road, Stroud, GU32 3PJ) and Buriton Primary School (High Street, Buriton, GU31 5RX).
This is not a catchment list. Which school is your catchment school depends on your exact address, and some schools do not use a catchment area at all.
How to apply
Hampshire County Council runs applications for state schools in the county. Its key dates page (checked 5 October 2026) lists these main-round dates for September 2027 entry.
Starting school in Reception (Year R) and moving from infant to junior school (Year 3): applications open 1 November 2026, the deadline is 15 January 2027, and offers are sent on 16 April 2027.
Moving to secondary school (Year 7): applications opened 7 September 2026, the deadline is 31 October 2026, and offers are sent on 1 March 2027. The council's Year 7 page says you can name up to three schools.
Applications are made through the council's online portal, linked from its school admissions page. Moving mid-year, for example after a house move, is a separate in-year process on the same page. Because Petersfield Infant School and Herne Junior School are separate schools, an infant child needs a Year 3 application for junior school; check the Year R and Year 3 page for how this works.
How catchment works
Hampshire's council says that if you apply to your catchment school you will likely have a high priority for a place, but a place cannot be guaranteed. Some schools receive more applications from their own catchment than they have places for, and some schools do not operate a catchment area. Each school's admission policy sets out how it ranks applicants when oversubscribed. The council's admissions FAQ covers this, and recommends naming more than one school on your application.
To check a specific address, use the council's school catchment area finder. We do not list which streets fall in which catchment, because the council's finder is the authoritative answer and boundaries can change.
Ofsted reports
We do not quote inspection outcomes here. Search for each school on the Ofsted reports site to read the current report. The register notes that from September 2024 Ofsted no longer makes an overall effectiveness judgement in inspections of state-funded schools.
Independent schools
Two independent schools are in the area. Churcher's College describes itself on its own site as a day school for girls and boys aged 3 to 18. Bedales School describes itself as a co-educational day and boarding school for ages 3 to 18. Fees and admissions are set by each school, not by Hampshire County Council.
