Petersfield Recycling Centre (HWRC): Hours, How to Book, What to Bring
The official guide to Petersfield's household waste recycling centre — opening hours by season, how to book your visit, accepted materials, and what to know before you go.
Petersfield Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) — the local tip — sits on Bedford Road and is the place to take larger household waste items that won't fit in your weekly collection bin. Unlike the kerbside recycling collection, the HWRC requires you to book an appointment in advance.

What You Can Take

- Household batteries
- Engine oil (limit: 10 litres per 6 months)
- Paint (limit: 5 litres per month)
- Carpets
- Large cardboard boxes
- Car batteries
This is not a complete list. Other materials may be accepted — always check hwrc.hants.gov.uk for the full current list before your visit, as accepted items are updated by Hampshire County Council.
Not accepted: Asbestos, aerosol cans, gas bottles, tyres, TV sets, and most electrical appliances (check the council website for e-waste disposal options).

Entry Fees
Hampshire residents: Free
West Sussex residents: Free
Non-Hampshire residents: £13.50 per visit
DIY waste disposal (builders' rubble, soil, etc.): Additional charge — see website for current rates.

Vans, Pickups & Trailers
If you're using a van, pickup truck, or trailer, you need a separate permit from Hampshire County Council. This is not a same-day process — permits are issued to individuals with a valid Hampshire address.
Do NOT turn up with a van or trailer without a permit — you will not be allowed to tip.
For permit information, visit hants.gov.uk/wasteandrecycling/recyclingcentres or contact the council directly.

Tips Before You Visit
- Arrive early during summer and weekends to avoid queues (people tend to visit mid-morning).
- Sort your waste at home if possible — the site staff appreciate it, and it speeds up the tipping process.
- Don't bring hazardous waste (asbestos, gas canisters, etc.) — the site staff will not accept it, and it's a safety issue.
- Leave extra time if you've booked during lunch (1pm–1:30pm) — you won't be able to access the site.
- Check your booking confirmation — it will have your time slot and any notes from the council.

Alternative Disposal Options
Garden waste: Petersfield operates a separate garden waste collection service for residents with subscriptions. Check hants.gov.uk/wasteandrecycling for the current scheme.
Bulky items (sofa, cooker, bed frame): Some items can be collected from home by the council for a fee. Contact Hampshire County Council directly.
E-waste (fridges, TVs, computers): Some retailers and specialist recyclers accept electrical waste. The council website has a locator.
