Where trains go from Petersfield

Petersfield station is managed by South Western Railway (SWR). It is on the route SWR publishes as Timetable 17, Portsmouth and Haslemere to London Waterloo. The current edition runs from 20 September to 12 December 2026.

Heading north, the line runs through Liss, Liphook, Haslemere, Guildford and Woking to London Waterloo. Heading south, it runs through Rowlands Castle and Havant to Fratton, Portsmouth & Southsea and Portsmouth Harbour. Not every train stops at every station, so check the one you plan to catch. SWR's timetable marks both Portsmouth stations as the stops for the Isle of Wight.

How often, and how long it takes

In the weekday daytime pattern of the timetable valid from 20 September to 12 December 2026 there are two trains an hour each way: a faster one and a stopping one. As examples from that timetable, the 11:48 from Petersfield reaches Guildford at 12:18 and London Waterloo at 12:51, while the 12:10, which calls at more stations, reaches Waterloo at 13:23. Going south, the 13:33 from Petersfield reaches Havant at 13:46 and Portsmouth Harbour at 14:03, and the 13:13 stopping train reaches Portsmouth Harbour at 13:48.

Peak, evening and weekend services differ, and the timetable changes in December, so use the National Rail journey planner or SWR's live times for the train you want.

Ticket office and staffing

According to National Rail's Petersfield station page and SWR's own page, checked on 5 October 2026, the ticket office is open Monday to Saturday 06:10 to 20:00 and Sunday 08:00 to 18:00. There are ticket machines, and you can collect pre-booked tickets from them. The station has ticket gates.

Staff help is listed as available Monday to Friday 06:00 to 11:00 and 16:00 to 21:00, Saturday 06:00 to 20:20 and Sunday 08:00 to 18:20. SWR describes the station as staffed part time.

Two practical points on tickets. Contactless bank cards cannot be used to tap in and out at Petersfield, and Oyster cards are not valid here. SWR smartcards can be issued, loaded and used at the station. Buy before you board: SWR's timetable booklet states that a penalty fare is £100 plus the single fare, reduced to £50 plus the fare if paid within 21 days.

Station car park

SWR lists 154 spaces in the station car park, and National Rail lists 9 accessible spaces. The charges shown on SWR's Petersfield station page on 5 October 2026 were:

Peak day ticket £9.70. Off-peak day ticket £4.90, with off-peak starting at 12:00 Monday to Friday. Saturday £4.90, Sunday £4.90 and bank holidays £4.90. An hourly rate of £1.60 is available from 12:00, through RingGo only. Weekly £38.70, monthly £135.40, quarterly £406.20 and annual £1,354.00.

The RingGo location code is 77485. Parking is free for Blue Badge holders who register with SWR beforehand; the registration link is on the station page.

If the station car park is full or you want a cheaper all-day rate, compare the council car parks in our Petersfield parking guide.

Bikes

SWR lists sheltered cycle storage at the station with CCTV, with 172 spaces across platform 1, platform 2, the platform 1 car park and a secure area. Bike hire is not available at the station.

Step-free access and assistance

National Rail classes Petersfield as step-free category B1: there is step-free access to all platforms, which may be via long or steep ramps or via the street. There are no lifts. SWR explains that wheelchair users reach both platforms by level access at the London end, and that crossing between platforms step-free is by the level crossing at that end.

There is an accessible toilet, operated by a RADAR key which staff can provide on request. SWR says the toilets are on platform 2 within the booking hall. There are no baby changing facilities and no Changing Places toilet.

SWR says assistance is available at all times trains are running, from station staff in the morning and evening peaks and from the guard on the train at other times. You can book assistance up to two hours before travelling on 0800 5282100, and the line is open 24 hours a day except Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Other facilities

The station has a waiting room on platform 1, open during ticket office hours, plus help points on all platforms, Wi-Fi, a cash machine, a post box and somewhere to buy refreshments. There is no left luggage, and lost property is handled at London Waterloo, not Petersfield.

Taxis and buses

SWR lists a taxi rank next to the station entrance, reached from Lavant Street, and bus connections at the station. See our Petersfield buses guide for routes.

Engineering work

When engineering work closes the line, rail replacement buses run instead. SWR gives the replacement bus stop as the station forecourt, off Station Road. Check SWR's planned improvements page before a weekend trip. SWR customer services are on 0345 6000 650.
